Your QuickBooks File Won’t Open? Maybe it’s caused by TLG File Errors

You open up your QuickBooks software and select the file you want to work, but it won’t open and you get an error code. Does it look something like

  • “QuickBooks was unable to open the file [pathfilename] on the host computer [host name]. Try opening the file with QuickBooks on the host computer or run the QuickBooks Database Server Manager on the host computer and then try opening the file on your computer.”
  • Error 6190, 816: QuickBooks was unable to open the company file
  • Error 6190, 82: QuickBooks was unable to open the file [patchfilename] on the host” when opening a file on a Linux server.
If the problem persists, please contact Intuit Technical Support and provide them with the following error codes (-6190, -816, -82).”
This is caused by a TLG file error.

The TLG file is a Transaction Log file and contains various bits of data associated with your QuickBooks file.  These errors can be seen when the TLG file gets too large, or when the host server your file resides on is reconfigured.

When this occurs deleting the TLG file can sometimes be your only option.  When you do this no data is lost in your live file itself, but the data needed to fully restore an old back-up file may not be there so you should only do this if absolutely necessary.  (See Sleeter Group article on TLG files)
Step 1: Delete the TLG file that is the issue.
Step 2: Rename your QB file by changing the file name in the file directory by at least one character.
Step 3: Open your newly named file.  A new TLG file will be created.

The file should open with no errors.
Best of luck.
