New Employee? 5 Fast Things You Should Be Sure To Do.

Hiring employees is a big responsibility.  Going about it the wrong way can cost you.  Here are some items that can help you prevent problems before they start.

  1. Get an employment application.  This is a simple way to get all the most basic but important information about your new hire.
  2. Get a completed W-4 and I-9 before someone starts work.  You technically have 3 days to get this information but that won’t help you if someone gets hurt day 1.
  3. Hire a payroll service to help you with your payroll taxes.  When these taxes are mishandled or paid even a few days late it can cost you big.
  4. Have and use an employee handbook.  This should clearly define your policy on a wide variety of employee related matters.  Laws vary state to state so downloading one someone published online is not a wise move.  Contact an employment attorney for a document that works best for your customer.
  5. Keep record of time worked.  Consistent employee time records are important because the burden of proof is often on the employer if any allocation is filed with the department of labor.
